The pulse mission has officially started in Chennai on Monday, March 7. At least 50 local companies expected to attend the pulse presentations and B2B meetings.

Its not just about food security in India. It is also about nutritional security and pulses can lead the way.

  3. Jennifer says:

Canada and India are natural partners. India is the world’s largest pulse consumer and grower; Canada is the largest exporter of pulses.

  4. Brad Michnik says:

Multi sector group started in Chandigarh with an excellent market briefing by the local cdn trade commissioner Gurbans Sobti and the Indo Canadian business chamber. Shortly thereafter the Saskatchewan companies embarked on a busy meeting schedule. The Indians are certainly interested and engaged in meeting Saskatchewan companies.

Chittagong was a busy day. The pulse presentation was attended by both importers as well as the Mayor of Chittagong. We also had the opportunity to tour a dal plant, the pulse market and an international trade fair. A tour of the port also proved useful for the logistics company and terminals.

People locally must have thought there were VIPs coming through though because we had a police escort from the time we left the airport to the time we returned for the flight back to Dhaka.

There was also press coverage of our visit. For example: http://bit.ly/fOQjAt

AgWest Bio took the lead on organizing an agricultural biotechnology workshop in Delhi with ICAR, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. It was a great opportunity for the ag biotech cluster from Saskatchewan to discuss their various capabilities. Some of the organizations are already active in India and others were exploring how they can engage with Indian counterparts for research collaborations and exchanges.

The pulse presentation in Delhi was one of the busiest stops for the group. There were a lot of questions from the importers present on such matters as grading and quality. The one on one business meetings were also very busy between the SK exporters and buyers. Many of them indicated that they are looking at being at CSCA in July this year as well.

The pulse mission ended in Colombo. In addition to a great turnout by the industry for the presentations, there were also a lot of questions by importers on the quality and grading concerns for red lentils due to the unusual growing conditions last crop year. This session provided a good forum to address these questions head on and keep the dialogue open.

On the second day in Colombo, the group had a chance to visit the pulse market, splitting plants and major importers/millers. Saskatchewan is the most active Canadian province in Sri Lanka for exports, so it is an important market for us to both maintain and grow.

This mission’s objectives went beyond just trade and investment. In New Delhi, an announcement was made on Saskatchewan’s support for a health care project being lead by Dr. Lalita Malhotra and husband Dr. Tilak Malhotra of Prince Albert, SK.

Originally from India, the doctors decided to give back to their home country by helping women who normally don’t have access to early detection methods for cervical cancer. With the support of the Saskatchewan government and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, the 5 year project should help many poor women in the New Delhi area receive the tests they need to detect possible cervical cancer and save lives.
