Trade Mission to Mongolia
By Yi on with Comments 1
STEP and its seven members in the agricultural equipment sector were in Mongolia from August 10-16, 2010. The mission objective was to attend for the first time a special farm show named ATAR-3 2010 or Virgin Land-3 2010 and determine what opportunities exist for Saskatchewan agricultural machinery manufacturers and to further develop these opportunities into concrete sales. The mission also involved visiting in Ulaan Baatar and meetings with the Mongolia government officials, associations, banks, importers, and farmers.
The show was held at Gatsuurt Farm, Tsagaannuur Soum, Selenge Province, Mongolia from August 13-15 and it was the first dry land farm technology and equipment show in Mongolia. The show was co-sponsored and organized by the Canadian Embassy in Mongolia, the Mongolian Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry (MFALI), Governor’s office of Selenge and Tuv aimags, and Gatsuurt Company. Approximately 350 delegates from more than 200 Mongolian agricultural businesses, various levels of Mongolian government, media, and international organizations attended the show. The Prime Minister of Mongolia and the Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Light Industry presented at the show and visited STEP and its members’ booth.
The Mongolia show organizers considered the show to be a showcase for Mongolia’s Agricultural industry and its farmers on how advanced dry land technology and equipment may help Mongolia to improve it productivity, secure its food supply, and protect it environment. By organizing this farm show, they officially encouraged the use of new technology and equipment, and introduced innovations to help farmers with their enhancing their productivity.
Twenty international companies exhibited at the show with fifteen being Canadian companies. Saskatchewan had a very strong presence at the show as STEP and seven members represented two fifth of the exhibitors (There were no Mongolian companies exhibiting at the show).
As a sponsor of the show, STEP achieved brand recognition. One STEP member had successfully set up an office in Darhan City, Mongolia to extend its operation in the Mongolian market. Two other STEP members signed an MOU or agreement with a Mongolian company to establish a partnership. Other STEP members and Saskatchewan companies also developed solid contacts with potential partners or clients.
Mongolia offers the best opportunity to market Saskatchewan’s agricultural machinery, technology, and service. Both new and used equipment suppliers may find market niche in the country. However, some issues and challenges need to be addressed before Saskatchewan companies enter or extend the market. STEP member companies were able to understand the market and establish contacts in the market. They also may locate their potential partners and buyers.
