Agri-Value
Agriculture is an exciting and dynamic sector in Saskatchewan. The days of solely focusing on commodities is the past that we build on for our future. While Saskatchewan is fondly remembered by some by its nickname “the bread basket of Canada”, so many other value-added subsectors are emerging out of agriculture, helping it become a diversified, thriving driver for growth in this province.
Trends like global food demand requiring production to double by 2050, the need for environmentally friendly & sustainable alternative uses for agriculture products in non-agricultural applications, and consumer preferences for health (both for themselves and for the planet), traceability, sustainability, quality and certifications (eg. fair trade, organic, kosher, etc), all bode well for Saskatchewan’s position as a key supplier to the world.
Saskatchewan’s agri-value exporters are known internationally for their strengths in:
- Agricultural commodities (grains & oilseeds, pulses and other special crops)
- Livestock (both animals and genetics)
- Fertilizers & plant nutrition
- Feed ingredients and animal feeds
- Pet foods & ingredients
- Value-added food ingredients
- Natural health products & functional foods / ingredients
- Retail-ready foods & beverages
- Agricultural biotechnology & life sciences
- Agricultural bio-products
- Bio-fuels
- Agricultural consulting services
